I want to say short tailed male but it is so hard to tell. I had trouble sexing my own short tails. Does it flare at all? Do you have betta male you can sit beside the tank? Try the mirror trick.

Yeah, I agree, based on the lack of egg belly (a shape they get when full off eggs)and the length of the ventrals (even though one is broken) i'm 99% certain it is a plakat male, and a nice one at that He has just got to unclamp those fins!

For animals, the entire universe has been neatly divided into things to (a) mate with, (b) eat, (c) run away from, and (d) rocks. - Terry Pratchett

I guess it's a male then.

I kind of like that he has shorter fins... makes him... different. Plus, I don't know if you've noticed, but one of those two long fins on his underside is broken in half.. it was like that when I bought him

And as for the flaring, I'm not sure what you mean by frilling, but the gill covers flare out to the side and a little from underneath big time. Well, it's good to know, thanks everyone!

Those red fins underneath its belly are long and bright red, usually a sign for me to distinguish a male from a female.

hmm, after looking closely at the first pic, there is a rounded belly, when it flaired did it have much frill? a male will have large frilling while some females wont have any at all or very little, or close to a male, but not quite, u get that alright?

EDIT: u know what? i am changing to being positive its a male, although the fins look too small for the body, look at the head structure, larger, more full, and look at those ventral fins wow a female would never carry such fins, so i am positive it is a male, oh and very nice steel blure coloration

dont forget that some males aren't aggressive and wont flare , also that females can be agressive just like a male. i really don't think that that is a female b/c the body shape doesn't look like it. the body is two bold for a female which most of the times have rounded skin. i am willing to bet on it is a male. the just on the fact that the fins show male(not a good tester) the body looks like a male with dull, bold built.

I tried the mirror trick. It didn't go crazy or anything, but it did flare a number of times - flare, display fins, turn around, flare, display fins, turn around... that sort of thing, over and over. So if that's any indication, I may have to change my betta's name from Leela to Lee

the body shape looks male and I have never seen ventrals or a dorsal like that on a female.

I say male plakat.

Not looking at the fins, it just looks like a male. The body shape, head, everything. I can easily imagin long fins on that fish. Not so with the pictures of the females.

They shade the glow of it with their mossy-misty costumes,
They wear masks of silk, porcelain, brass, and silver,
So as not to mislead with their own, ordinary faces.

females flare.

good way to tell is to stick a mirror near by - some females will flare (i had one that was confused), but the male will flare, and come back and keep doing it.

but i think its a female.

It does flare, but not very often. Do females not flare at all?

OK, a few weeks back I posted about how I rescued what I thought was a female betta. I just wanted to check and get a consensus: Is this a male or a female?

So.. I've been trying to get a better picture of my bettas finnage, and this is the best I can do... it's blurry and the glass is dirty, but does this give a better indication of whether it's a male or female? It's still on the small side, 2" or so.

When you feed them nice hearty foods, it's like conditioning them to breed. Females tend to get more stripey than males (never actually seen a male go stripey).

When females are stressed or scared or simply showing submissive qualities (like to another more dominant female), they'll go pale with dark horizontal stripes. Breeding stripes show as the female showing light colored vertical stripes or bars, and sometimes the main body color gets darker. Lemme see if I can find examples...

So if I feed her bloodworms or live food, she'll get stripes? vertical or horizontal? dark or light? and what's an oviposter?

Sorry for the q's, but this is my first betta.

I agree. Wait until she is mature and then tell but currently it looks like a female.

Stuff him/her chock full of yummy goodness (bloodworms, etc) and wait until they come into breeding colors... if it's female, she should go stripey and you should be able to see the oviposter.

Of course, this doesn't work with all bettas... I still have one that I can't tell if it's male or female.
