Male or female? | |
Light_Bright Moderator Posts: 1156 Kudos: 1403 Votes: 351 Registered: 16-Jan-2002 | I want to say short tailed male but it is so hard to tell. I had trouble sexing my own short tails. Does it flare at all? Do you have betta male you can sit beside the tank? Try the mirror trick. ___________________________________________ If at first you DO succeed, try not to look astonished. |

Plus, I don't know if you've noticed, but one of those two long fins on his underside is broken in half.. it was like that when I bought him And as for the flaring, I'm not sure what you mean by frilling, but the gill covers flare out to the side and a little from underneath big time. Well, it's good to know, thanks everyone! |

EDIT: u know what? i am changing to being positive its a male, although the fins look too small for the body, look at the head structure, larger, more full, and look at those ventral fins wow a female would never carry such fins, so i am positive it is a male, oh and very nice steel blure coloration Last edited by fishyhelper288 at 08-Mar-2005 20:09 |

NowherMan6 Fish Master Posts: 1880 Kudos: 922 Votes: 69 Registered: 21-Jun-2004 | I tried the mirror trick. It didn't go crazy or anything, but it did flare a number of times - flare, display fins, turn around, flare, display fins, turn around... that sort of thing, over and over. So if that's any indication, I may have to change my betta's name from Leela to Lee |

Janna Mega Fish Posts: 1386 Registered: 24-Aug-2003 | I say male plakat. Not looking at the fins, it just looks like a male. The body shape, head, everything. I can easily imagin long fins on that fish. Not so with the pictures of the females. They wear masks of silk, porcelain, brass, and silver, So as not to mislead with their own, ordinary faces. |

denver Mega Fish Mile High.... Posts: 1031 Kudos: 205 Votes: 110 Registered: 25-Jul-2000 | females flare. good way to tell is to stick a mirror near by - some females will flare (i had one that was confused), but the male will flare, and come back and keep doing it. but i think its a female. |

NowherMan6 Fish Master Posts: 1880 Kudos: 922 Votes: 69 Registered: 21-Jun-2004 | So.. I've been trying to get a better picture of my bettas finnage, and this is the best I can do... it's blurry and the glass is dirty, but does this give a better indication of whether it's a male or female? It's still on the small side, 2" or so. NowherMan6 attached this image: Last edited by NowherMan6 at 06-Mar-2005 20:46 |

kitten Fish Guru Meow? Posts: 2266 Kudos: 2194 Votes: 19 Registered: 18-Nov-2003 | When you feed them nice hearty foods, it's like conditioning them to breed. Females tend to get more stripey than males (never actually seen a male go stripey). When females are stressed or scared or simply showing submissive qualities (like to another more dominant female), they'll go pale with dark horizontal stripes. Breeding stripes show as the female showing light colored vertical stripes or bars, and sometimes the main body color gets darker. Lemme see if I can find examples... ~Meow. NowherMan6 Fish Master Posts: 1880 Kudos: 922 Votes: 69 Registered: 21-Jun-2004 | So if I feed her bloodworms or live food, she'll get stripes? vertical or horizontal? dark or light? and what's an oviposter? Sorry for the q's, but this is my first betta. |

Of course, this doesn't work with all bettas... I still have one that I can't tell if it's male or female. ~Meow. Thus spoke the cat.~ |
