However, males can sometimes have short fins too. If it has an ovipositor (white spot between the pelvic fins) then it is most likely a female. |

The second has more horizontal barring, which is sometimes (though becoming obsolete) used to tell... though of course it works best with fish that are showing good colors because stressed or sick males will often show barring coloration too. I'm no expert, and that's just one of the criteria (which include the white ovipositor and fin length) that tell if you have a male or female. Fin length isn't too reliable because young bettas or ones that aren't bred for the showy fins won't have long fins, but they'll still be males... ><> |
