Mean Paradise | |
bruce Fingerling Posts: 40 Kudos: 34 Votes: 0 Registered: 07-Feb-2005 | I just got a paradise fish and put it in my ten gallon, and it seemed fine, but by the time I went to bed it bit the eye out of my mollie, I could tell it was the Paradise because he wouldn't stop chasing my mollie, I put the Paradise fish in my breeding tank by itself, but still lost my mollie? I put it back in my ten and it seems ok now, but I'm worried it'll hurt my other fish? Has anyone else had this happen, should I just bring him back to the store..? |

They can also have unpredictable temperaments. Not that the individual fish is Jekyll & Hyde, but out of one tank at the LFS you can get a paradise that's shy, another that fits perfectly into a community, and another that's a menace. IMO another problem with your setup is having both of those fish in a 10g. Paradise fish like room to swim, and while a 10g is fine the only other fish I'd consider stocking with one would be bottom feeders. Hope I helped some ~~~~~~~~~~~~ There is water at the bottom of the ocean |

Two Tanks Big Fish Posts: 449 Kudos: 328 Votes: 13 Registered: 02-Jun-2003 | I once tried keeping a paradise fish in a 29 gallon with danios and a few cories. One minute the paradise fish seemed placid; the next, it was sending the danios for cover. It actually would go behind plants and wait for an unsuspecting fish to swim by, then charge out of the plants to try to grab it. Later, I found out that paradise fish like to eat danios (something I found on an internet site about paradise fish). I ended up putting him in a ten gallon by himself. |

I spent most of my time finding places for the males where they wouldn't kill the females and remove the eyes from all the other fish in the tank. Finally when summer came I tossed them outside in 60g containers 1male to 2 females and had some 500 fry by the end of the summer without doing anything but topping off the containers. Every last one of those fry was just as bad and I sold off even the adults because I didn't want to deal with that nightmare all winter again. They definitely get bored in 10g tanks and do much better in 20gallons or more. They are also much more interesting to watch in 20gallons along with less likely to kill off their tankmates. You still have to watch them though and don't keep anything with them that you can't stand to lose. Mine would stalk the others by cruising behind the plants and acting like they were just swimming by then snapping around and pecking the other fish's eye out. There are a few more peaceful ones that have been kept in community tanks or in groups but I wouldn't bet on the one you buy turning out that way. |
