I've NEVER seen betta girls in any chain store but Walmart, and that infrequently. They almost had as many females as males! Of course, they were in that oh-so-lovely blue water in small cups, but they all looked healthy and seemed to have just come in. They were all pretty small and came in a nice range of colors. I picked up two with blue hues (I've been looking for some blue to add to my tank) because I couldn't decide between them. One looked like a pale blue cambodian (pale silvery-blue body with blue fins) and one is a more solid, darker blue. I think the cambodian may actually turn out to be like my pink cambodian girls with a touch of blue in her. (And here I was trying to get girls DIFFERENT from the ones I already have.) I was planning on quarantining the two in the one gallon tanks I had leftover from upgrading my boys to 2 gallon tanks. However, on the way home, I realized that the five gallon minibow (intended for betta imbellis, whenever my order comes in!) has been running empty for some time now. Hey, I get to quarantine them together so they get used to having company! Woo! Actually, there were NO signs of aggression at all between the two girls, so I think I made a good choice. After QT, I'm hoping to add them to my twenty gallon with the other six girls. This would bring the total up to eight, so I'm almost finished with my series. The girls are all named after the Greek Muses, of which there are nine. The three names left are Terpsichore, Urania and Melpomene. Yes, I've already used the EASY names. The original Urania was renamed Jezebel the betrayer after she tore through my girls, but she was much more aggressive by herself than either of these girls appear. She's now by herself here at work, but I'm hoping that the initial docility of the two new girls is indicative of their personalities. I think the cambodian will be Terpsichore (I have yet to decide how to shorten this name) and the dark blue girl shall be the new Urania (Rania). Melpomene... well, I DID see a lovely bronze-ish girl at Petsmart and now I'm pondering if I shouldn't just finish off this series with a bang. Pictures will be forthcoming. ~Meow. Even the girls at the independent stores have been disappointing lately. Since I lost two of my males-including my oldest who was my favorite-I really haven't had an interest in seriously searching for bettas You've been quite lucky and have the female betta tank I always wanted. Keep us posted how things are going with them and I'm looking forward to seeing some pictures soon! ~~~~~~~~~~~~ There is water at the bottom of the ocean |

I've occasionally seen female bettas at a local Wal-Mart, and at a Petco as well. They are pretty tough to come across, though. I wish I'd seen some when I was setting up my 29 gallon. |
