Hey i have just put my male betta in a 10 gallon aquarium with 5 neons . I dont see him really attacking them but when they get too close he pushes them away but dosent flare his fins.

So i was wondering is he likely to kill them, and his tail keeps getting stuck in the filter should i just put it back in his bowl?

if you cant turn the flow of the filter WAY down, id put him ack in his bowl. The neons really arent in danger- atleast in my opinion- pushing is fine- flaring, chasing, and biting arent.

linkin park rocks.

what kind of filter is it. It seems like you have something a little too big for a 10 gallon.

The betta is probably used to living in a bowl; some bettas love a higer flowing filter, while others would prefer stagnant water. It sounds like your betta prefers the serence life. But him back in his bowl he will be happier. Also your neons will not get hurt by your betta, no offense to bettas, the neon tetras are much faster and can escape danger. But to make everyone happy take out the betta and maybe add a few more neons to complete the school and make them happy.

Oh and also, don't ever be sorry that you don't know anything, you are trying to learn so there is no reason to be sorry. I used to be in your position (now i am not trying to gloat) but by surfing this sight my knowledge of fish has grown exponentially. Thanks everyone!

yea, the betta would do better in the bowl. i dont see a problem with the neons but the tank set-up.

Goldfish? Nope, they get much too large, and put out far too much waste. Perhaps another neon (that'll make them feel more comfortable), and a dwarf gourami? They're hardy, colorful fish, and go quite well in community tanks.

No, and yes. Depending on which color variety you get, they can range from $2.00 to $8.00 or so in price.

They'll easily fit into a ten, these fish are small and not too active. They also tend to not worry about territories (except maybe with other gouramis), and won't claim half of the tank.

Their scientific name is Colisa lalia, that way you can do a little research to see if you like them.

Yes, although a pair is best (they like to play rough with one another). Either way, you have enough room.

Since your filter seems to be very good quality, I say you can get away with 6-8 neons and 2 gouramis with no sweat. However, you would have to be dilligent about water changes. I'd add the gouramis next and depending on your nitrites and stuff, you can add a neon here or there until you are fully stocked. If you are not completely sold on the gouramis, another pair fish that does well with neons. Is the german ram. However, they are not as active as goruamis and live near the bottom of the tank. Plus they are a bit more work and need live plants to be happy. Another species of gourami that stays small is the honey gourami. They are a bit more rare that dwarves so they are good if you want something a bit more exotic (but still cheap and easily found).

Summary:
7 neons
2 dwarf gouramis, honey gouramis, OR german rams

Hello, I'd like to suggest you leave the poor Betta in the tank rather than sticking him in a "bowl"! The intake won't hurt his tail and he'll move around more once he's comfortable. Betta's need space just like other fish to be healthy and happy.

Then you could also add a few more Tetra's to the tank. I have my male in with some juvy albino Bristle noses and an ADF in a 10 gallon with a HOB and a sponge filter and Buddy never bothers the filter.

Yours will be fine.
