Found two betta girls for sale at a local big-box retailer (not a pet store). I felt sorry for all the fish there, because this is one of those open 24 hours a day sort of places, where the lights are on all the time. Poor girls were awake (at midnight - well past any self-respecting fish's bedtime) and VERY responsive. Which is why I bought them. The other fish seemed so listless, and though these weren't the colors I would have chosen, they were so responsive, I couldn't resist. After a few days of regular day/night cylce lighting and regular feedings, their color has improved dramatically. They are even beginning to explore the 55 gallon tank they are housed in, and don't seem intimidated by anyone except the gang of cories. (As well they should be!) Had to share - I'm quite proud of them!

That's exciting, congrats on the find! What other fish are with them besides the cories? And what colors are they?

Congrats on your good find. You lucked out with finding such fish.

However, a problem is, those fish need to be boycotted. The store has reason to buy two more bettas (because they just sold two).

I'm not saying what you did was wrong, I am just saying those kinds of stores need to stop selling them.

Congrats I saw some betta girls at work the other day, and IMO they can be just as beautiful as males. Good job saving them, but like Racso said, the store is going to KEEP selling them unless you stop buying from them. So next time you consider purchasing fishies from there, remember the torture their going through, and perhaps go someplace else more reliable.

I know, I know....I usually don't shop ther at all, but I absolutely had to have supplies for work the next day (and fish food - little buds had been eating "junk food" for while) and the store is open 24 hours.....Couldn't resist!

BTW, they are a lovely black/red (Kate) and a tan/chocolate (Annie). They live with 7 rasboras, the aforementioned 9 cories, 2 gouramis and 1 golden algae eater. I keep floating (plastic) plants to provide shade for the gouramis, and the bettas have made themselves quite comfortable in them, venturing out from time to time.
