That, and male pearl gouramis have bright red bellies, much redder than that of females. The stomach color is the most telling sign of a pearl gourami's sex.

And when he gets to Heaven, to Saint Peter he will tell: "One more Marine reporting, Sir! I've served my time in Hell."

I shall watch your thread carefully r0b3y as I have a male pearl all on his own at the moment and I was hoping to get him a female mate very soon but like you I was not sure if I should get 2 females to 1 male? or if he would be fine with just 1 female? I no I should not have another male though.

Gender differences: Pearl Gourami.

Mature males have anal fins that develop extended filaments, and in exceptional specimens, these filaments can extend past the caudal fin. Red on the ventral portion of the body is more intense in mature males. Mature males also have dorsal fins that are elongated - exceptional specimens can have a dorsal that extends past the caudal fin.

Females have rounded dorsals, anal fin much more modest in proportions, with no extended filaments, and considerably less red in the ventral area of the body. The difference in top-class specimens is very conspicuous.

I have an excellent photo in my Braz Walker pocket book of a truly magnificent breeding male. If you want it, send me an E-Mail and I'll send the scan by return mail.

I've got some good pix of my males and some of my females as well. As stated, the males have a longer dorsal fin that is more pointed ,whereas the female's dorsal is much rounder. This becomes more evident with age, though. Harder to tell apart when young. The mature male does develope a red belly, but this isnt' a good way to sex immature Pearls. You can keep males together. I've always heard it better to keep more females than males, but i have almost a 50/50 ratio in my 125 gal (they all stay together for the most part btw) and the males never get a scratch. The females, however, from time to time, run into things sustainging minor injuries (after being chased by a male or males). Even with one spawning so far..the male was more tolerant of other males near his brood than the females. Interesting.
My pictures:
Male..flash washed out his red belly though.

I have just 1 male and 1 female pearl gouramis.
I think you would be OK with just 1 of each gender, or with 2 females, thats your choice. Theres no reason to not get a male though...they are gorgeous in their breeding colors!
