I just got a red male betta yesterday and put him in my established 1 gal tank. No filter, no air pump, just a little gravel and one live plant. There is a light on top but that is it. Now my question is this. A bubble nest, is it bubbles all together or do they float apart? What do they look like? I am going to try to attach a pic of my tank (my pics were all too big so PM me if you want/need to see a pic). Should i get a female? I can get a 10gal tank w/no problems.
Thanks for any help.

In a bubble nest, the bubbles all stick together at the surface of the tank due to the male's saliva. That is a cue that the betta is very happy. I wouldn't add a female unless you really plan to breed, and even then you would have to take it out after breeding was over, as the male would try to kill the female.

And when he gets to Heaven, to Saint Peter he will tell: "One more Marine reporting, Sir! I've served my time in Hell."

Bubble nests are completely normal and healthy for bettas to build. Sometimes, it takes them a little while to figure out how to get it right, so the bubbles may drift apart. Eventually he will be able to build you bigger thicker nests. I've got some pics of bubble nests my boys have built, post if you'd like to see.
And like Nick said, I wouldn't add a female. Unless you carefully plan out their breeding, the male will just kill her.
