I just bought a ten gallon tank and currently only have my male betta fish there, and I want to stock more, any good companions? Would a ten gallon be too small for a dwarf gourami? Thanks

How about a sparkling gourami? I also had hoped to add an upside down catfish and a few hatchets, would this be overstocked?

It's best not to mix bettas with other Anabantoids in small tanks; they tend to be aggressive towards one another. Good tankmates would be tetras, rasboras, and other small schooling fish.

Really? Aren't tetras fin nippers? I have seen about five different compatibility charts and they all have different answers, and I don't know what to put in with my betta

Some tetras are fin-nippers. A general guidline to follow is that the larger, deeper-bodied tetras tend to be more nippy while the narrower-bodied tetras are fine with bettas.

There are exceptions to the rule though, for example Black Phantom Tetras (deep-bodied but very peaceful and fine with bettas) and Silvertip Tetras (narrow-boddied but very nippy as far as tetras go).

thanks for the info um how about neons? I really want a hardy fish no bigger but a bit bigger than an inch to go in the tank without overstocking. . .

Neons are fine. You could put about six or seven in there.

You can have a school of 6 Neons, with the Betta.

If it is well planted go with the neons, or a platty trio might look really neat! Definitly get some corys or snails though!

i think cories would be good, cuz they'd eat the leftover betta pellets!!!!! good little scavengers.
