What can co-exist with a male betta? | |
mer_maiden Enthusiast Posts: 273 Kudos: 163 Votes: 0 Registered: 03-Sep-2003 | I would not suggest putting brackish water fish like mollies together with the betta, or really any livebearers (platy, swordtail, guppy) which do best with a little bit of salt in their water, that the betta does not need. Otherwise they can make great community fish, if they want to. They may even be a little shy in some tanks. Fast moving fish like neon tetras (and some other tetras) are not really good tankmates, with all of their fast constant movement. |

TigerAngel Fish Addict Posts: 522 Registered: 22-Feb-2004 | I had my male Betta "Sprike" in with a male molly "Murray" for months, until Sprike, who not long died (of old age we think). They go on so well, that when Sprike died, Murray went around tail slapping the top of the water, like a whale. Murray was transferred to a communtity tank, but this did not work out. (chased the females too much). So he is now in a 5 gal with 3 male guppys for tank mates. He is the one being chased now. I did not have salt in with Murray, cause he never liked it. So the water was fresh water, not brackish. Would not suggest Guppys in with Bettas. Mollys are bigger and can hold their own, exspecially males. In a smaller tank you could do some guppies..if they bred it'd be some extra betta food. Or, ottos..cories..are always ok. Guppies would depend on your guy's personality. |

Janna Mega Fish Posts: 1386 Registered: 24-Aug-2003 | I wouldn't put male guppies with bettas because of the tail. A nice long tail would remind a betta of another male, and you know what trouble that would bring. I would get a school of small cories and leave it at that. Shrimp and snails would probably do fine as well. They wear masks of silk, porcelain, brass, and silver, So as not to mislead with their own, ordinary faces. |
