Are wild bettas highly agressive or more comparable to other small labyrinth species like the sparkling gourami? The store near me has had several wild bettas of unknown species for over 6months and noone is interested in buying them. I was thinking of adding them to my 55g with the sparkling and spiketail gouramis. It's now my small labyrinth fish tank(if I ever catch that yoyo loach).

it depends on the type of the wild betta, betta bellica would probably fight other labyriths, same as betta umerica..... the moreaggressive bettas.

the shy ones like coccina, tassyae etc.. are more peaceful and may get along,

bottom line it is hit or miss, so if you try it make sure u have some time to keep an eye out for them.

Well they aren't betta bellica. I can't narrow it down much until I get a better look at them. They hide out in the plant tanks at the back of the store and have been there since I found this store 6-8months ago. I thought they were croaking gouramis(trichopsis vittata) at first but that isn't quite right. They're just tiny little brown fish(haven't grown over 2" ) with possibly some stripes and short fins. There was a sign on one tank that said wild bettas and now there's a sign that says female bettas but they look nothing like female splendens bred today. I suppose wild splendens could be possible.

Problem is if I toss them in my 55g and then find out they don't get along getting them back out may prove difficult. It's fairly heavily planted with 5 or 6 pieces of driftwood and some rocks. I've been trying to catch this yoyo loach for probably over 2weeks now so I can restock the tank with my gouramis.

Generally the onesI've had contact with aren't aggressive to other species, even the snarky ones that'll fight cats and dogs amongst themselves, BUT if you say they look similar, that could be a problem. Two of mine took exception to my SAE and they didn't last the night.

Do you know what group they belong to? Clarets? Splendens? are the mouthbrooders?

Are you sure they are wild bettas and not one of the types of paradisefish?

I've an old fake driftwood in my tank that the yo-yos live in, and my little rubbernose pleco too. If I ever need catching them I just take it out and I know they'll be inside. Thing holds water pretty good, kept all 3 alive for the 30 minutes or so it took me to move last time. I took it out and into a large rubbermade container of tankwater.
Yeah, I couldn't catch them either but I know they were in there

One mystery betta:

Turns out they do have some color in their fins but it's very light and mostly only shows up with camera flash or directly under bright lights. So is it a female splenden or a wild betta? Wild splenden?

looks like a plakat female splenden.

i would guess that wild bettas wouldn't have such a large belly area as it would slow them down.

Brown and striped plakats? I've never seen a betta splenden that looked like that and they said they got in around 2 dozen awhile back. All exactly the same with the same colors and markings. I also think it looks much much skinnier than most female splenden pics I've seen. I didn't notice a large belly. Perhaps my pictures aren't good enough.

I'm thinking maybe betta picta: http://aquaworld.netfirms.com/Labyrinthfish/Betta/Betta_picta.htm Aside from more blue in the tail it perfectly matches the first pic.

How big is it?

To me, it looks like a splendens, maybe a splendens hybrid, but still from that group. She looks bleached and stressed though, so its hard to tell.

Pictas have no red wash through the fins and only the males have that strong band of irridescence. through the caudal and anal fins. IMO that fish has way way too much irridescence to be a picta (and the anal fin is the wrong shape). That also goes for falx, which look very similar.
