Well my wife and I have been very busy these last 3 or 4 days, new baby and all But didn't get to finish my weekly WC for my Bettas last weekend. So after we got settled in, I started to do my WC's. Then I get to my 5.5 gal. w/2 of my girls. I drained about half the water, when I looked in the corner. I couldn't believe my eyes My oldest female Betta, Venus, had built her own bubble nest (which isn't so strange because she has done it before and actually posted it on FP)The only difference this time is that she released her eggs and actually placed them into the bubble nest I think it's really great, I just feel bad for her because, first off I didn't see it until half of the water was out, so I think i messed alot of it up, also she is guarding it intently, but i'm sure she doesn't realize nothing is going to happen. But what a site!

Truly amazing!!!! As the female Betta isn't the one who attends the eggs under normal circumstances ---- one wonders how she even knew what to do - or how to do it????

So what do you think? Instinct or learned behavior or both?

Wow Jessnick! That is absolutely amazing! My two female Bettas bred to my surprise! They actually did the embrace! But with yours I wonder how she got the eggs out by herself.... :%) Anyway, it would surprise me if the female's eggs did hatch! Let us know if the do!!!!

Nah, they can't hatch. A male betta is required for spawning, so that the eggs will be fertilized. If no male is present, then the eggs won't hatch. They are basically duds.
