That's not special care, though... that's just... psycho bettas. My eldest betta, Liberty, has recurring fin rot. I now have just about every medicine in the book for curing fin rot. Wouldn't you know? It was the VERY last one I tried that helped him... tetracycline. He's doing well now. I doubt he'll ever have a full tail, but it's getting longer... he's an old man ... had him for two years now. I have one betta (Equity, one of the head-thumpers, actually) who never used to be a "special care" betta, but now he is... one day I came home to find that the tail that had been a nice long tear drop veil tail in the morning was now half gone! I don't know what happened (never found the missing bits), but his tail was split nearly in half length-wise. Nothing I've done has cured him (even with the gamut of meds I've dosed him with) and he has the barest flag of a tail. It's gotten to the point where I've been contemplating putting him down, which I'd hate to do, because he is SO healthy otherwise. The tail erosion progress to rot and has entered the caudal penuncle... if I can't heal him soon, I may have to truly consider that option... I don't want him in pain. Even before he was uh... de-tailed, Equity was spastic... he'd dart around his tank like he was possessed. He calmed down before his tail incident, but now he's taken up the mad dashes again... I don't know if that's a pain want-to-get-away-from-my-tail reaction or if he's back to his darting. *shrugs* All of my bettas (male and female alike) like to find someplace to curl up. I miss my banana plant (it died after a major re-aquascaping... guess it didn't want to be moved), which used to send up lily pads. When the lily pads were starting to wilt at the end of their life cycle, they'd start to fall just below the surface of the water and curl upwards, making a little hammock. One of my betta girls would always claim this as her bed for the weeks before I had to clip it off. It was the cutest thing ever. Hmm... one of my eldest female bettas is starting to get a white film over her eyes. Thusfar, it doesn't seem to restrict her vision, but it may make her "special needs" in the future. The only other betta with an oddity (doesn't really qualify for special needs, but I'll throw it out anyway), is Jezebeau. He's a short-tailed male (had a personality complex for the majority of his first year with me... he was bought as female!), and is the most aggressive betta I have. He also builds the BIGGEST bubblenest I have EVER seen. He lives in a two gallon kritter keeper and can easily fill the ENTIRE surface of the water with a nest several bubbles thick. In a day or two. The only reason I list this as "special care" is because it's takes a great deal of finagling to FEED him without busting half the nest! ~Meow. Thus spoke the cat.~ |
