went to my lfs and got 2 female bettas today. went home and put them each in 1 gallon quantine bowls next to each other. ever since then ive notice the 2 fishes swimming towards each other constantly against the glass. one of them has 2 horizontial lines on both sides and the other has 2 little vertical lines both sides on or close by the gills. they are not flaring at each other, so im assuming they are not males. could this be a case of mating courtship or just 2 females trying to fight.

Hey haRg0wbOi - the females will still try and swim towards each other - they can be pretty aggressive as well!

Have you tried taking the bowls away from each other? That might make them a little more calm.

A large part of that reaction is due to the new environment. I would follow Chris' advice and then just give them some time.

Generally, horizontal lines (usually the fish goes pale with dark stripes) indicate fear or nervousness while vertical stripes (dark fish with light bands) can be a sign of readiness to breed or simply good health. Bettas that are happy/healthy/ready to breed (with or without the presence of a male) will often exhibit the vertical banding.

...or, at least, this is what I've heard and seen to be so.

thx kitten, it turns out that the fish with vertical lines is a male. ive notice that its body, including ths fins and all are bigger than the females. ive always suspected of it being a male the momment i brought him home. so the clerk at my lfs was wrong.
