bettas and filtration | |
NowherMan6 Fish Master Posts: 1880 Kudos: 922 Votes: 69 Registered: 21-Jun-2004 | can one keep a betta in a planted tank without filtration? obviously it would just be the betta in there with the plants, and I would have a heater. tank size would either be a 2.5 gallon or so, or i might even use my spare 10 gallon. thanks |

You might find that with the plants you'll want a small ammount of water circulation. So long as there are places for the betta to get out of the current you might want to try a small HOB. ^_^ Current [link=Contest Rules]http://www.fishprofiles.com/files/forums/Aquascaping/44382.html?200412022138" style="COLOR: #EB4288[/link] |

I have a HOB that i used briefly with the 10 gallon: that used to be a holding tank for an aggressive tiger barb but has since been broken down. for that i had a AC 150 and even on the lowest flow setting it would make a piece of hornwort i had in there FLY around that tank, so i dont think there'd be much room for the betta to go. i guess i should also add that my whole inspiration for using the 10 for the betta happened this weekend. i was at a petsmart and in their largest plant holding tank was one single male betta swimming amongst a number of very large sword plants and i just thought the whole scene was beautiful - ya know, still water, lots of green, and this colorful fish with fins fully spread out just serenely floating around this large area. now, i know my 10 isnt nearly as big, but i still feel like i could reporduce that in the 10 better than in a 2.5. i just dont want the filtration creating too much disturbence. |

The idea sounds great and I know the betta will be pleased to get a 10 all to himself, the only reason I gave a caution is that cynobacteria tends to form in planted tanks that are low on nitrAte (yes you read that right, low on nitrAte) and have little to no water movement. Since you'll only have the betta in the tank you may want to consider options on keeping the nitrAtes high enough. ^_^ Current [link=Contest Rules]http://www.fishprofiles.com/files/forums/Aquascaping/44382.html?200412022138" style="COLOR: #EB4288[/link] |

NowherMan6 Fish Master Posts: 1880 Kudos: 922 Votes: 69 Registered: 21-Jun-2004 | one step ahead: i currently dose my 46 with KNO3 to ward off cyano. shouldn't be a problem keeping nitrates up. what about water changes, though. how often and how much? would 50% per week be ok, or more? |

Babelfish Administrator Small Fry with Ketchup Posts: 6833 Kudos: 8324 Votes: 1570 Registered: 17-Apr-2003 | 1 betta in a planted 10, IMO won't need 50% weekly. If it were my tank I don't think I'd do much more than 10% weekly. Another thing to consider is that any root feeding plants that you have will be a bit unhappy with how little waste gets down into the substrate for them, you might want to consider the feeder tabs. ^_^ Current [link=Contest Rules]http://www.fishprofiles.com/files/forums/Aquascaping/44382.html?200412022138" style="COLOR: #EB4288[/link] |

NowherMan6 Fish Master Posts: 1880 Kudos: 922 Votes: 69 Registered: 21-Jun-2004 | yeah, it'll only be regular gravel, but I already have some extra root tabs. I'm not crazy about them though and I may splurge on some flourite. I also have a 28watt hood for that tank, so I'm probably also going to have to set up a little DIY CO2, but that shouldnt be too much trouble. Thanks Babel! |

Azrael_Darkness Fish Addict Posts: 547 Kudos: 420 Votes: 8 Registered: 26-Oct-2004 | a whisper filter (2-5 gallon) on the lowest setting creates very little current. I got a 2.5 minibow set and my betta seems nice and happy. Although the filter seems to knock the floating pellets to the floor so i gotta make sure he gets them. |
