I have a Betta coccina in my Asian biotope. Peaceful, almost shy, nice coloring but a bit of a picky eater. Never causes problems with the other fish, including sparkling and honey gouramis.

I keep smaragdina, imbellis, mahachai, and wild caught splendens, and really, all are far easier than fancy splendens.

the behaviour is vastly different.

the males are very paternal, carng for the young for over a week after most fancies would have eaten them.

the males even care for each other's fry!

I keep the male in with a female, and both seem quite content. They are fussy about food, but thats to be expected.
They are also fussy about water quality, but I'm getting the hang of what they like.

I would like to get a pair of coccina soon, but they are hard to find over here.

I am possibly getting a pair of falx or fusca, but i'm not 100% sure.

I have B. pugnax, B. imbellis, B. bellica, and both WC and CB B. splendens currently. I should have some B. smaragdina and B. brownorum quite soon.

I have a female B. pugnax, and I really like her. Unlike most other bettas, this species comes from moving water and therefore is a very active species.

For the most part, she is very peaceful, but sometimes she gets iritated when I put a new fish in the tank. As for feeding her, that is not a problem. I bought her thinking that I'd have to constantly be buying live food to feed her, but I was wrong. The night I got her and I put flakes in the tank, she was greedily eating them along with the other fish.

She is much more interesting than any B. splendens I've had. B. pugnax is also one of the largest Betta species, and she is almost 4" long standard length.

Bah...and I got all excited when you mentioned that auction on the 13th....since I have been all wrapped-up in getting things together for the Calgary Aquarium Society giant spring auction on the 13th, it never occured to me that another Canadian club might be having an auction on the same date....those bettas are about 1700 km further away than I want to drive.:#(

Ship them?

Its warmish over there isn't it? and heatpacks are easy enough to get, just bag the devils and post them up

Shipping would be too expensive for anything under 20 fish, I am afraid...I can wait until my LFS gets some in for me....they have been good getting me pugnax and imbellis so far.

Just thought I'd share a pic of my coccina. It tends to be on the shy side so it takes a long time to get good shots.
