my boss just bought a betta for our store and put it in a 2 gallon fish bowl, but does it need to be heated for the fish to survive as he is not moving much in his new home, though he has only been there for a day.

Bettas should be kept in temps of 75-82 degrees. Some people have kept them lower but its better for them to be warmer.

Bettas do not need heat to survive, per se, but heating is greatly beneficial. As already mentioned, they prefer higher temperatures than most tropical fish.

I recently invested in heater as i wanted to move my tank into another part of the house. He never used to be very active without one and ever since i got it he races from one end of the tank to the other.

From what I understand, you won't be able to put a heater in a 2 gallon tank. It has to be at least 5 gallons, or the temp could get too high and you could possibly cook the fish.

I've always used a heater in my 5 gal, and my gals are much more active than my friend's male who doesn't have a heater. It also helps a lot with a betta's immune system, and to prevent ick/parasites.

Betta's are tropical fish, so yes, like any other tropical fish they're gonna do better with a decent water temp ... When kept in lower temps they tend to be more lathargic, plus they become more suseptible to illnesses

A 3G tank is about the minimum you can safley heat... Mine are in 3G tanks wth 25W heaters & it works a treat

If the room temp is consistantly above about 22C (70ish F) you could get away without having a heater he won't be as active as if her were at a slightly higher temp. However, If the room temp fluctuates (eg: the air con gets turned off at night & it get's colder) then you might want to look at investing in a slightly bigger tank & a heater
