I have 2 dwarf gouramis, one is blue with orange fins, the other one is orange with blue fins. The guy at my lfs says you can tell the gender of dwarfs the same way as regular gouramis, i.e. rounded top fin on females. Therefore my blue one would be a male and the orange a female. Is this true? I have read that with dwarf gouramis it's the colour that distinguishes the sex.

Actually the easiest way to sex dwarf gouramis is their color. It is true that the dorsal fin of a female's is more rounded at the end (near the tail) and the male's in more pointed. Sometimes this can be hard to see, though.

To help you out, here are a few pictures of each:

If you're still having trouble, can you post some pictures of them? I'm sure we can help you out if you need us to

My female has the same colouring as the first male pic, my male has the same colouring as the third male pic. This is what had me confused about the colour way of sexing them, but my female definitely has the more rounded dorsal fin. Thank you very much for sorting that out for me.
