feeding dwarf gourami question | |
littletank Hobbyist Posts: 57 Kudos: 59 Votes: 0 Registered: 25-Jan-2005 | hello. I just added a blue dwarf gourami to my 10 gallon. He's seems fine and happy. My only concern is that he won't eat. He doesn't seem to like tropical flakes(tetra is the brand. My platys and neon tetras like it. I gave them some frozen brine shrimp yesterday, and of course the Gourami, "Bahama", gobbled those up. This morning though at feeding time I gave flakes and all the fish ate except him. I know that he was hungry because beforehand he was going to the surface looking for food and got all excited when he saw the others eating until he realized it was flakes and not shrimp. What should i do? I am not going to feed him brine shrimp every day. It's too expensive and yes, a little more time consuming. Also, they dont make the cubes small enough, so it's wasteful. I have a three year old and two year old (humans) that stay at home with me and keep us on a tight budget (have to cook supper EVERY night), so I just can't do the shrimp thing every day for Bahama. I'm thinking like once a week. Is there anything y'all can think of that I can feed him that doesn't have to be defrosted and is not so expensive? littletank[a href="mailto:ebmlhelm@cox.net"]ebmlhelm@cox.net[/a] Last edited by littletank at 26-Jan-2005 10:47 |

Or it could be just that he is not that comfortable yet in his new surroundings, which would just be a matter of time before he comes around. I've had a couple of these Gouramis and from my expierience they are not very picky eaters. What you said you tried should be just fine. And also welcome to Fish Profiles! I had the same problem with 1 of my Angels, but after 10/12 days it accepted flakes & now eats them aswell. In the meantime, feed him Brine Shrimp every 3 days, so he wouldn't die. http://www.deathbydyeing.org/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/corydoras/ Member of the Malta Aquarist Society - 1970. http://www.maltaaquarist.com |

littletank Hobbyist Posts: 57 Kudos: 59 Votes: 0 Registered: 25-Jan-2005 | Thanks for welcoming me. I really enjoy this site, and well, kind of need it too. I'm sort of new to fishkeeping. YES, the tank is completely cycled. I went through a month of drama and lost three platy fish before i added enough BioSpira for a 30 gallon. All my water readings have been perfect ever since! I was REALLY stressed for that first month: changing water, vaccuming, researching, tending to a totally freaked out apple snail who kept climing out of the tank and cracked her shell. She's great now. Anyway, I have the blue dwarf gourami, 4 neon tetras, two platies, and an apple snail. Tomorrow I'm bringing back 3 zebra danios. I'm a traitor. I bought them to help cycle the tank, but now I have too many and I really havn't gotten attached to them. They bore me and I'm not fond of their color, and well everyone says I have to many fish in there, so they have to go back I guess. No one seems to be bothering Bahama (my gourami). He's a little shy, but he just doesn't want to eat flakes, so for the past three nights he's had shrimp. I'll have to stop giving it to him so he doesn't get spoiled. Then he'll never eat flakes. Y'all have a good weekend. littletank |

I remember reading some of your posts when you had those initial problems; I felt terrible for you but as a novice myself, I knew I couldn't really help with any brilliant advice. So it is great that you have a cycled tank, happy fish, and (I suspect) very happy children. Which all makes for a happy mom. |
