Hi all

I had three bettas(F) living in my main community tank, really they never settled in, almost always stripey and brown, not the lovely blues and purple they were when they were alone.

one in particular is badly bullied. i noticed on thursday she has got part of her bottom fins missing. I have a two G plastic tank, I have put her in there to keep her out of trouble. it has floating plants, and a cave thing. i would test and change the water regularly.

it has no heater, temp is 76 degrees. do you think she could stay there permanmently?

she is swimming about a bit and seems ok.

what do you think?

Shouldn't be a problem at all. Like you said just keep up the water changes and as long as your room temperature is not too warm or cold and doesn't fluctuate a lot then should be fine without a heater.

As long as the temperature doesn't fluctuate too much, you should be fine.

No need to test the waters, really, just do a 100% change weekly. Scoop the betta out and put her in a cup (the ones they're sometimes sold in work well, which is why I keep them all ). Remove decor and dump the water down the tank, carefully, so as not to spill out the substrate. Add water, swish it around, dump it out. Repeat until no detritus comes out of the water and it smells clean (or, at least, not yucky).

Refill with water, decor and any additives you use (dechlor, etc). Add betta girl. Enjoy.

You can also gravel vac the tank instead, but I find this to be the quickest, most efficient way of cleaning small tanks.

Oh... and clean up after yourself... housemates tend to get peevish if you leave gravel or leaves in the sink. Not that I have ANY experience with that at all. Nope, never.

By all means she could stay there. Some female Bettas just aren't social and get bullied or are the bully. All of my Bettas are in 2.5 AGA's and do very well. Also none of my tanks have heaters, as long as the room she is in doesn't have a dramatic change in temperature between night and day, you should be fine. I do 100% WC every 4-6 days. As far as that little bit of fin rot, maybe some Melafix would be a good precautionary measure just to be sure it doesn't get any worse. I'm sure she'll be fine, she's probably quite happy being alone now. Good luck....HTH

Edit: Wow when I started writing noone had posted yet
Damn you guys are fast! Sorry to repeat you Kitten

sounds good, if your betta isn't doing well in a tank you can always move it. the set-up's should be good, and they can fight one-another.

I am guessing that should read and they can't fight one another Chris?

Am glad you all think it is a good idea, have come home today to a very nice happy looking blue betta! no more stripes!

now the two that are left don't look so hot in comparision. hmmmm. I don't exactly have the room to house them separately as well!

i have re named the 2 G Bailey. at the moment she is stalking a plastic frog she has in her tank.

am looking forward to the WC this week I shall make her a backing to go on the "tank" and perhaps tomorrow after work but her a new cave thing......... why do I feel these girls will all have separate rooms by next Wkend??:%)]

thanks for you excellent help people

right an update, just cos i love talking about my fish,

The newly named Bailey is staying in her 2 G tank and seems VERY happy, no more stripeyness and a fair bit of swimming around she is eating lots as well!(well more than the nothing which she was eating before.) i am so pleased with her.

On the way home from work I bought another small tank, its hexagon shaped and plastic, also two Gallons, it is standing on my dresser, but the female in there is not doing so well..............

she has gone sort of patchy and white(colummaris??) on one side. she looks really miserable and is not eating.

Bailey did look like that when i took her out, but not as bad, I think for now i wil keep changing the water every day? i know it seems like a lot of stress but i am very careful. and it is what i did to Bailey and it seems to have worked?!?! fingers crossed.

i am also going to add Melafix as well.

thanks people
