was just curious, because my female bettas make it about 3-5 months before the baloon up like they are full of eggs and then never make it. any body know the life span of these pretty ladies? and if they are full of eggs, other than breeding, how can i help them live longer

with real great care, bettas can live 6-9 years, needs a little bit more info, at the lfs are they big, or small?

if they are small, they are probably around 4 months old, so the avg. lifespan would be 1-2 years, and older bettas are usually less.

My oldest female is 3 to 4 years. My oldest male is going to be 6 in October.

it sounds like eggbinding, are you buying them from the same source?

I've heard tannons help with eggbinding, as does spawning if you catch it early enough.

My females live for between a year and six months before they develop cancer like lumps and then die - either dropsey like syptoms or just from the lumps.

Blue who I think is now suffering has lasted a year and half(she has one lump and dropsey). Peaches went first at a year(two lumps), and bailey, who went from a mixture of fin rot and something internal - a swelling on one side not as onced as lump, lasted six months.

I really have to put Blue to sleep, poor girl. she was so gorgeous. she reponded to treatment for a while, but lately she is worse.

it is very depressing and I won't be getting any more from my LFS cos I think it is a problem with a supply?

I am really impressed that Bettas can live so long. it makes me feel very guilty as well.another reason not to get anymore.

We had 2 Bettas with similar issues. They both responded to treatment pretty well at first, but then it came back a month or so later and they died. My daughter did not want anymore after the second one, so we have not kept any in over 2 years.
