ontariobetta Enthusiast Posts: 227 Kudos: 243 Votes: 2 Registered: 17-Jul-2004 | I've never had probs with micros and ventrals. I do think it has to do with the water. I did a little experiment with 2 spawns, one I did hardly any water changes and the other i did frequent, both while feeding MWs. The one that I did hardly any had many missing ventrals, and the one with frequent had none missing. I stoped feeding MWs tho cus i hate looking after the smelly culture ashley |

Toirtis Mega Fish Posts: 1260 Kudos: 529 Votes: 6 Registered: 24-Feb-2003 | How have you found the microworms Toirtis? Just fine, actually....perhaps there is something wrong with your culture? Read what a top Canadian breeder (and source for some of my stock) has to say on the subject: http://www.bcbetta.com/fry.html |

Callatya Moderator The girl's got crabs! Posts: 9662 Kudos: 5261 Registered: 16-Sep-2001 | How have you found the microworms Toirtis? I have fed my last 2 spawns in these and a good percentage have ventral problems, and both sets of parents were phenotypically fine there is a lot of talk that the MW are responsible for the missing ventrals, either through a nutritional thing or because they rest on the bottom and there is localised buildup of ammonia that burns the fins off its not even that the fins are gone in some cases, they just dont seem to pop out, you can see them under the skin but in some cases they never appear. Have you found anything along these lines with MW? I'm tryng a few experiments with different substrates in case its the oats. So far, oats produce the highest yeild, sago stinks but it is a good transport media for posting cultures, and split peas are good, but make harvesting tricky, and they tend to make me feel nauseous. |

Callatya Moderator The girl's got crabs! Posts: 9662 Kudos: 5261 Registered: 16-Sep-2001 | Get them onto BBS as fast as you can though, as MW are thought to cause the loss or late eruption of ventrals. I'm trying Vinegar eels at the moment. |
