this is a rather basic question, i'm sorry if it's been asked before. i'm just wondering how you tell the difference between a male and female gourami, and at what age/size it's distinguishable.

well..it depends which gourami ur referring too...some..by colors..some...ifficult to determine, although males tend to have a longer, pointed anal fin. examining the fish with a light from behind highlights a female's reproductive tract....and as for age...thats i guess is guessing game.

the common is the peral male gourami has extentison on its anal fin, with most others like snakeskin, and blue the dorsal fin is an ok way to tell, points and longer male. please correct if wrong.

For the blue gouramis (including blue, opaline, gold) the dorsal fin is longer and pointed on males (ie comes to a point towards the tail end of the fish). This is an easy way to sex them BUT it can be hard to tell in younger fish. When the gouramis are under 2" sometimes the males have rounded fins like the females.
