my next door neighbor has had a betta for some time now and hasnt been giving it the proper care it needs.
-nitrates-200
-nitrites-1.0
-very hard
-alkalinity-500
-ph-9.4

so i was wondering if the betta would be okay being switched to a better tank?
-nitrates-0
-nitrites-0
-very hard
-alkalinity-40
-ph 7.8

will the tank change shock him?

I would do small water changes or a very slow acclimation to the new water.
A friend of mine had a betta and didn't change the water for 3 months, and this was an unfiltered tank. Then he did a 100% change and the betta died within a day.:#(

9.4? Are you sure? It's quite hard to get pH so high, especially when ammonia is a weak acid in water.

i'd advise your neighbor to do a 100% water change... i don't see how that'll hurt him. if anything, it'll help him.

I second bettahex, the ph isn't that much different and losing the nitrites and nitrates would help. If he were mine I would do 100% water change and add 1/2 tsp. of aqua salt per gallon. This will help stop any illness he may of contracted in unclean conditions.
