Also, when buying from the store, if you can, buy females that are already in a tank of females. This is to make sure that the females you house won't rip each other up. (Of course...they still could...) |

I have six in my twenty gallon and really can't imagine all of them in a much smaller tank. Although my girls are really sweet and non aggressive, they DO have their moments and like to get away from each other. It's more to do with aggression/personality that it is to do with filtration. Sure, if you wanted to, you might get away with five for filtration's sake, but really, there's not a whole lot of space in a five gallon for them to have the whole territory thing going on. Like SolubleFish said, try to go with girls that were raised/sold in a community tank. Like he said, though, that doesn't automatically mean that they'll be good tankmates. Five of my girls were bought from the same tank and get along great. One was added a few months later (bought in a cup from a completely different store) and settled in with little fuss. I tried adding another girl from the same store I bought the first five from. She came from a community tank and was quite ragged, so I figured she'd be a pretty passive girl. WRONG! She ripped through my girls and is now sentenced to solitary confinement for the rest of her natural born days. ]:| ~Meow. Thus spoke the cat.~ |

I think thats a good number. -Formerly known as the Ferretfish |

kitten Fish Guru Meow? Posts: 2266 Kudos: 2194 Votes: 19 Registered: 18-Nov-2003 | Not that big? My female bettas are near three inches long. Even if you went by the stupid "one inch per gallon rule" you'd only put two in there. And he didn't say you were stupid. If you read, he said the IDEA was stupid. I tend to agree, in a not-so-offensive type way. Five is far too many for a five gallon, in my opinion. There's not enough room for any aggression that might occur and there's really not that much room, period. I stand by my suggestion of 2-3 at the most. ~Meow. Thus spoke the cat.~ |
