ok i picked up 2 gouramis for my community tank today at petsmart. I looked at the tag with their name and it said:

max size: 4"
semi-agressive

so i knew they were suitable. when i got home i looked at the gourami section of numerous websites but i cant find a match. help plz.

Hi,
that is a Paradise Fish species Macropodus opercularis
They grow from around 2.5-4 inches.
They c an handle most temperatures, and are very hardy.
Males, like 2 Bettas, will fight to the death.
If you have 2 males I would remove 1 before they kill each other.
They are suited to community tanks, but may be slightly nippy depending on the individual, so keep an eye on any long finned fish.

Looking at the dorsal fin, it looks male to me (pointed, females have more rounded dorsals).

Some days you're the pigeon and some days you're the statue.

Remember that age and treachery will always triumph over youth and ability.

If both have the bright red tail then they're both males. Not a good thing, as Sneaky_Pete wrote males will fight like male bettas. They may not show agressiveness now because they're still settling into the tank.

Maybe you could exchange one for a female? Even so, make sure there are some floating plants and places for the female to hide.

And don't forget they are very good jumpers!

This is a pic of the pair I used to have spawning; it clearly shows the difference in tail color between the sexes:
