Were they the only fish in the tank? What are your intentions, are you trying to breed Bettas? It's not really a good idea to "mix" male and female Bettas --- especially in a small tank... You may end up with VERY battered fish -- shredded fins, etc. --- and the worst thing that COULD happen would be death..... If you are trying to breed... The best way to go about that would be a minimum of 1-2 weeks of "conditioning" --- Now this is done by allowing a male and female to view each other - but not "get to each other"... The best time to condition is when you note a well rounded tummy on the female -- which 9 times out of 10, means she's full of eggs and ready to mate.... Only AFTER the male has made his bubblenest do you place the two together... And you need to carefully monitor the situation, as the female will need to be removed soon after - while the male can remain to tend the eggs & fry when newly hatched.... As far as it being "weird" that the male chose only one of the females to bother... it's not... In many fish species, males seem to "focus" on one particular female - even when others are available.... Even with some of the platys, this was the case. A male would "zero" in on one - constantly harrassing her for several days or even weeks, and would then eventually grow tired of her and move to another female --- repeating the pattern.... Then I also have some quite "randy" males who seem to go after any female that swims by! I'm sure it would be the same with Betta males --- but having only male and females in the same tank does increase the risk of heavy aggression and "damaged" fish.... Having too many females with one male could result in the females "ganging up" on the male -- and death is a very probable result... I currently have a 20 gal tank of all female Bettas --- but even doing this I have to carefully monitor - just to assure that they're all getting along with one another.... So far I've been lucky! Only had to remove one female due to aggressive behavior towards her tank mates.... Anyway, I hope this helps! To thine own self be true... |

~ Sin ~ Mega Fish Posts: 1252 Votes: 28 Registered: 24-Mar-2003 | Ok, few things: 1) Males & females shouldn't be kept in the same tank unless you're breeding, and then, just one girley at a time released at the appropriate time then re-isolated There are of course exceptions to this, but it shouldn't be attempted unless you really know your Bettas 2) What else is goin to be going in the 60? If it's nothing Betta un-friendly (which i'm hoping it's not since you're planing to put the male in there) then you'd be better off keeping the Male in the 3G & putting the 2 females in the 60. Females tend to handle both company and filtration better than males. Company because they generally arn't as agressive as males, & therfore won't pick on your other fish, and don't have the excessive fins of the males, therefore they don't present as such a fun looking target for other fish, filtration because, again, their lack of extravagant finnage. For the males, swimming in the sort of current that a filter on a 60 would create is kinda like swimming in the ocean in a wedding dres... It's damn hard work! 3) Back to your original question - No, it's not at all odd that he'd show interest in one & not the other, main 2 reasons that spring to mind, 1)Betta's can be picky about their partners, many a breeder has cursed & sworn at their betta's 'cause they simply wern't interested in each other .... & 2)It's entirley possible that he saw the larger girl as a threat to his terratory & the flaring he displayed was defensive behavior rather than mating behavior Sin |

They got to know each other during breeding and will now play in the ring of bubbles. But usually they will fight. It is not unusual for a male Betta to take to a female more, because the one that bred with him is his favourite....(Obviously) Anyways, I wouldn't keep them in the tank together unless you really really know they will get along. |
