There's always going to be an alpha female. I recommend keeping no less than three girls together, simply to spread out aggresssion. Most of the times it's not that one girl is really aggressive, but that with two girls, there's always going to be one dominant and one submissive and you're going to see more fighting.

Some females are just too aggressive to keep with other fish and are destined for a life of solitary confinement. However, you CAN successfully keep betta girls together (I do!). It just takes patience and a willingness to use trial and error in putting the girls together.

you should also try to get some photos, just so you can check that they are in fact both girls, and not short tailed boys

most people let there females fight so they can see who is the alpha fish(but yet people tell me the way i house my fish is cruel:%)) n.e way i personally haven't had alot of luck doing this. in all trueth bettas are best kept by themselves.

ya its always better to have a bunch then just a few. I have 8 in a 10gal right now with no problems at all. I do what you did, have them seperate at first then indroduce them once there use to eachother.

bettachris -

I personally think that outright fighting is a bit too aggressive. I've watched my girls while introducing them and if there's more than feints and rushes and posturing, then I generally separate them. While I HAVE seen the occassional nipped fin, I prefer to have nonaggressive tanks.

Right now I have a twelve gallon tank that I just introduced three betta girls to. I've been watching as one has made herself the dominant. She does feint at the next girl in the heirarchy (the third one is definitely at the bottom of the totem pole, she's kind of a loner) and after inspecting the one to get the brunt of the aggression, I found not a single nip or scratch on her. THAT is acceptable to me... I don't want harm to come to my fish because I think they should live together!
