ok well i plan on getting a new 20g L kit in a few weeks and i plan on getting some blue gouramis..i have heard some problems with M/F fights and pecking order type things...so i want to pick out a few females and maybe one male? whats a good PEACEFUL mix? how many is good?

this is the stocking list i would liken to include with my blue gouramies..6-7 false julie cats...and a school of harlies about 6-7 also...how many gouramies can i get...are the harlies too active for the blues?..

That sounds like quite a few fish for a 20L.

I've kept blue gouramis before, and the males do tend to pick on each other. I had 2 males and one female in a 37 gallon, but that was only because the second male was a rescue and it was better in my tank than with the Oscar in the other guy's tank.

My males were actually fine together, but for the sake of peace I'd recommend a M/F pair or two females. You can sex them by looking at the dorsal fin. The females have rounded tips on the dorsal fin (rounded towards the tail end of the fish) and the males are more pointed. If they're young they can be hard to sex, though.

With Gourami's it's better to have 2 females for 1 male.

20g tank is too small for a blue gourami.

Personally, I'd go with either two females or just one male or one female. A male/female pair is possible, but in a tank that small you don't want to risk having a male who likes to chase and harass the lady. There's very little room for her to escape.

And hold on... Didn't you say that you'd be moving your Brochis splendens ( "emerald cory" ) catfish into this new twenty gallon tank? I hope you haven't forgotten them in the stocking.

Here's a potential list:
6 Corydoras trilineatus
? Brochis splendens
8 harlequin rasboras
? blue gouramis

If it were my tank, I'd add at least two more of the Brochis and go with just the one gourami. The catfish are shoaling fish, and really need the company more than a blue gourami will.

If you want them, why not go for a school of harlequin rasboras? Otherwise, some smallish tetras (1.25-1.75 inches) should be okay. Just don't get a nippy species, such as serpaes. They'll be tempted to go after the gouramis.

Yeah, that's fine. Maybe go with eight each of the cories and rasboras; the more the merrier with them. They're all compatible behavior-wise, and are all hardy fish. Looks like a good stocking list.

There may be some nips here and there, but it won't be anything to worry about. Any damage caused will not be substantial enough to bother the gouramis much.
