I have a male paradise fish in my 30g with a school of neons, RTBS, cories, and a BN. There is no agression amongst the fish. The paradise fish is ~2.5" long, good color, eats well. The past few days though he's been doing what I describe as 'pacing', just swimming back & forth the length of the tank, over & over.

Is this just some sort of odd behavior or a sign of a problem? The spouse thinks he might be lonely and suggested a female...could that be it?

Thanks for any opinions

Is the weather changing in your area? Is he bubble nest building?

If you get him a girlfriend, I'd get two to disperse aggression.

Keep an eye on him. I had one that got along fine with my danios and cories for the first few days, then began to stalk them, hiding behind plants and attacking at random. I had to put a divider in the tank to keep him/her away from the others.

Well, I'm not too concerned about him with the other fish; they've all been together for months now.

He's not building nests but my first didn't until there was actually a female in the tank. Thanks for the two female suggestion, I hadn't even thought of that.

I wouldn't worry about it, but mine only dose it when I'm near the tank and haven't feed him for his little dance he and his friend Leo(male betta)do. But I wouldn't add females unless I was going to breed because paradise fish agression and personality is nearly the exact same as bettas. So try 3 females and a larger tank if you choose this.

My females got torn up in 4' long 60g breeding tubs outside with only 1 male. I wouldn't mix them in a small tank unless you have a fairly docile male. I disliked keeping them in tanks exactly for the reasons mentioned. They get bored, pace, and eventually take it out on their tankmates. I would mix up the tank decorations to give him something new to look at and explore.
