I have 2 male pearl gouramis and had to separate them as every time I sat and watched them, they fought. Who knows how bad it got when I wasn't watching. Fortunately, neither wounded each other too badly and they are both very happy to be in separate tanks! (although the prior dominant one is now dominated by a dwarf in its new existance!)

Ok so heres another question about pearl gouramis, since I have posted this I have seen a couple in a few different LFS's around here... do they have color variations? I have seen some with a brownish/gold tint, some that look peach colored, some that look yellowish, and the ones right now at the big fish store here look almost all white!

Yep, the second pearl was much happier within minutes of moving the grouchy one... which often just sits in the corner of the tank and watches the world.

The dwarf is barely bothered at all, and swims around without a care (mostly!)

Hmmm, that's an odd situation. Must just have been particularly grouchy pearl gouramis. I'm glad to hear the pearl/dwarf combo seems to work -- it's one I've considered.

(P.S. Sorry about the duplicate posts earlier: I got an error when I posted, tried again, got another error, but it appears to have worked anyway).

I have two pearls, female and male, named Pearl and Bailey respectively. Along with my 5 cardinal tetras, these two fish add so much color to my tank. They have great personalities. They both love to come up and nibble on the kids fingers when they place them in the tank. I think pearl gouramis are some of the prettiest tropical fish with their subtle and graceful coloring.

55g, well planted too

I moved the more aggressive one to a 75g with a resident dwarf gourami, who seems to have a more compatible attitude

I have never seen a pearl gourami in person! only pictures on the web, and fish do NOT photograph well, i guess because of they are so reflective. Could someone please describe to me what a pearl gourami looks like? (color/texture/pattern etc...)

Another cool thing about their appearance..is how kinda "frayed" the males fins look as they mature..

My tank has lotsa wood in it that stains the water a bit (in a white bucket it looks pretty green)

other tank inhabitants are (in case you're interested):
Hillstream loaches
female betta (will be more than one once they're outta quarantine)
Ottos
Cories
Bristlenose plecos
clown pleco

The strip is really more black than brown. They almost have a rainbow of color (like gas on water kinda irridescence) to their bottom fin.. The "pearl" or "lace gourami" description..come from what some see as spots..but can be seen as a really detailed network or black lines around the dots on their bodies. Some are so much more contrasting than others..and have patterns detailed like a fingerprint than you can get to know after watching them for awhile.
Of course..I'm a little biased (if you didn't notice) ..these are one of my absolute favorite fish.
I have 7 in a 125 gal planted community right now..
I've had Pearls in the past get up to 6".

Well since you wanted a discription...

They have the exact same shape as "regular" gouramis, like opaline and gold. They have a silvery body with a horizontal dark (brownish) stripe running from the nose, through the eye, to the base of the tail. Above the line the body is darker and below it is ligher. The line ends in a larger dark spot. The body is covered with white flecs, the pearls. The "pearls" are more prominent on the top part of the body than the bottom. The fins are also spotted. Depending on the fish and the lighting, the fins can have blue and red tones in them. Sometimes the pearls even appear bluish, again depending on the fish and lighting.
