Should you always remove your beta when cleaning or adding water?? I have a male in a 10 gallon hex tank. I don't want to scare him to death. But I am not sure what to put him in if I need to take him out to clean it. I can use a glass cup, but I was wondering since all of our dishes have been through the dish washer, would it harm the fish??

I have 5 1g betta tanks, so I always do 100% water changes. I have a cheap plastic cup that I use specifically for that purpose. My bettas have actually learned what the cups mean and don't resist to being moved for a few minutes too much anymore. After I clean the tank, I add a nice squirt of stress coat and gently pour them back in. It works well and (after a couple times) they don't get overly stressed anymore.

In a 10gallon tank you should be doing water changes
with a Gravel Vaccuum. This way you can suck water out and clean the gravel. There is no need to remove the fish while you do this.

Take Sneaky's advice and do gravel vac and water changes weekly. That will keep your betta happy.

when i do 100% water changes on small tanks, i remove the betta, they remain unactive for awhile, but then back to normal. i dont believe that u can scare a betta to death.

Scaring the fish is something we all have to live with- but if you do small water changes daily, just a cup or two and feed sparingly theres usually no need to go ballistic on water changes as high as 100%. I often think netting a fish is more stressfull and can cause the scales and fins to be scratched, and even using a jar or something can mean a stressful change of scene that bit to often. If you keep in top of this you wont have to gravel vac for months- and even if you want to you can get a gravel vac with a diameter of about 2 cms- hardly that threatening.Just move it slowly.

Longhaired, you should gravel vac at least 1/2 of your aquarium gravel every time you gravel vac to remove feces and other assorted detritus.

After a few times the fish will get used to the gravel vac procedure and not be scared anymore.

If there is food on your gravel, just cut down your feedings. I also think that it's better to do water changes, than changing all the water in a 10 gal. tank.
