My betta is in an unfiltered 2g hex with floating hornwort. I'd like to add gravel and a small plant or two. My question is about water changes in this type of setup. I currently move him to a bowl, change the water, then add new water and put him back in. With plants though I think this method would uproot them each time I did a cleaning.

Does anyone have a similar setup, and if so how do you go about doing water changes/tank cleaning?

Thanks

Theresa, I have a similar set up, but I don't ever take BadBoy out, I treat it as a normal water change, and just drain it down 50% this should help with the messing up of your plants, and gravel...heidi

Thank you

How often do you do water changes? What type of plants do you have with him? (love the name by the way )

i'd make up a small gravel vac too, perhaps using a small soft drink bottle or storage container and some hose from the hardware store (smallish diameter)

When I need to do a WC on any of my small tanks, I use airling tubing to syphon out the amount I want to change into a bucket. This is very convenient for me, as I can just take the bucket around the room to each tank, then dump it all at once in the laundry room sink. When the tank is only a gallon or two, it only takes a couple minutes. I then use a large plastic cup to pour in the fresh water. In that small of a tank and with only 1 betta in it, gravel vacs aren't really going to be a necessity. The plants will appreciate the fertilizer
