I recently acquired a couple of new bettas and I wanted to split a 5 gallon tank for them. This may be a dumb question but, can I put a male and a female in the split? (one in each of the halves). I've read about and seen many splits with male bettas but has anyone tried a male/female split? Would it be best to block their veiw a bit (eg. with plants)? I would put the female in a tank with my other females but she is VERY aggressive.

so basically it would be this

[ male | female ] in a 5 gallon.

yes it would work, just as long as the female has not been touched by the male, she shouldn't stress out too much.

I'd put some plants in front of the barrier to give the bettas a chance to swim around without seeing eachother and possibly stressing eachother out. I used to have two bettas in seperate 2.5 gallon tanks and I ended up having to put them in other parts of the room because the smaller male stayed on the far side of the tank and he didn't look happy.
Is it a rectangular tank or a hex?

It would be fine. The male will displa for her, and she may 'dace' for him, but they'll soon realise they cannot touch each other and get on with whatever it is that bettas do.

The only problem i can see would be that if you ever wanted to breed them you'd need to split them for a while to re-sensitise them a bit. they'd do the whole 'i don't want to spoil the friendship' thing

Also, if the female proves to be e to eggbinding (unlikely) you may have to rethink the arrangement.

Otherwise, go for it
