You could do a school of small cories, or a school of White Clouds, or a pair of Cherry Barbs, or group of Kuhli loaches, or a number of other choices - assuming the tank is filtered and heated.

bettas should really be kept by them selves. that's what i think. but i had kept bettas with high fin loachs with no problems.

Some rasboras or tetras would do good make sure they don't nip fins though.

Assuming the tank is filtered, you can range your choices from an African Dwarf Frog (make sure it's not an African Clawed Frog as they will hurt your betta), small school of cories, school of rasboras, school of peaceful tetras, school of white clouds, or a couple other peaceful tankmates. I wouldn't get cherry barbs since my experience with them has resulted in them being a little nippy and I wouldn't want to risk that with my betta, but the choices are rather numerous...

I would keep the Betta on it's own, but if you want some fish, you can always choose some Small Corydoras.

I'd get something slow-moving so that Betta isn't freaked out. I think African Dwarf Frogs, Apple Snails, Cories, Guppies,Platies, and BN Plecos are all good choices.

Id be careful of guppies and platies (especially guppies). Anything with colorful, flowy fins is usually not safe with a betta.

Bettas have a tendency to like to be the center of attention, so they'll nip guppies' tails if they are around...

*boggles* Malawi freak, you canNOT keep another male OR a female betta with the male in such a small space, unless you want a disaster area! Some say you can keep male and female together in a large tank, but personally, I wouldn't even try that. If you want to breed bettas, you generally only keep the male and female together for a short time. It's possible to keep several females together, but males don't work with other bettas.

I'd go with cories (who could possibly object to their presence?), maybe ADFs, snails... Maybe a molly, but I'm not sure about that. Guppies are probably too bright and long-tailed, but maybe female guppies would be okay? It kind of depends on the personality of your betta. An aggressive betta would be a bit harder to find roommates for.
