I've never combined a betta with anything and my understanding is that mixing bettas with anything is always a risk. Bettas are all different, some are meaner than others. I think your best bet is a school of small cories or something that will stay near the bottoms. If you choose something that occupies the mid and upper levels of the tank make sure that they are quick. Something like a school of danios or rasboras may work.

It is important to avoid fin-nippers, but you should also avoid adding fish with flowing fins because the betta is a fin-nipper too.

IMO, the best tankmates for bettas are ADFs and ghost shrimp.

It all depends on the bettas temperment (sp.) really. Some are more peaceful than others, and that will ultimately decide what else you can keep with him.

The shrimpies might end up as a little pricey snack...

Totally depends on the betta. I've kept a male betta in a 12 gal, a 20 gal, and a 125 gal community. Even mixed with things said to not work in general like guppies (in the 125 gal) and dwarf gouramies (in all three tanks). IN the largest tank I used to keep half a dozen females..and a male at a time.. Not all males I had worked in that tank, though. SOme were too aggressive..some too shy. Definitely, like someone else mentioned, no fin nippers.. A 10 gal can't fit much..Maybe a few Ottos with the betta..

I do not recommend keeping a male and female betta in the same tank unless you are breeding. Even then, only 1 female and one male should be put in the tank.

It's my experience that bettas are healthier when kept with other fish or next to other bettas. It gives them excercise. Otherwise, they start to just float around. I had my betta with a apple snail and 3 ADFs. It ate the snail and occasionally fought with the ADfs.

From what I hear, cories are a good companion for most bettas. Just basically try to find something that the betta won't want to go after or that will go after the betta! *grins* Some bettas will work out well with tankmates, and some are strictly bachelors who demand single-occupancy accomodations.

Sometimes a male can flare too much causing him to be constantly tired or to blow out his fins.

I'd go with Cories, OR kuhlis, not all of them, just one type.

For animals, the entire universe has been neatly divided into things to (a) mate with, (b) eat, (c) run away from, and (d) rocks. - Terry Pratchett
