I made the hour-long drive to my favorite lfs today. Had a shopping list but of course I have to look at every tank while there

Notice a tank marked 'sparkling gourami' which I've not seen in any lfs here yet. Looked very similar to my sparkling gourami except their coloring wasn't as good; I figured that was just due to being in a crowded store tank. I did also notice them being labeled T. schalleri and having written a few posts about these fish lately I remember sparkling gourami were actually T. pumilus.

Anyhow, I decided to pick up a few for my empty 6g to make it a species tank. Bring them home, do a nice long acclimation, move my original gourami in the tank, and start doing some research. It seems schalleri is actually the 'three-striped croaking gourami', which explains the absence of the sparkling coloration.

Has anyone heard of, seen, or kept these fish? Hopefully I'll be able to get some good pics soon. What a surprise this was

Definintly a croaking gourami. Where do you keep gettin these AWSOME gouramis? I would love some of those. How much did you pay for the sparkler, and then for each of the croakers? and how did you keep them alive on a LONG drive? BUt awsome fish and they should shoal cause they both are shoalers, not schoolers, but they like to have friends. GREAT find.

Thanks

The sparkling gourami I bought online when I was placing a big fish order, kind of a last-minute impulse buy.

I paid $6.75 for the four croakers, that's with a 10% holiday weekend sale discount and my 10% store discount

I don't do anything special for the ride home other than put the fish bags in coolers.

I've noticed a definite difference in the sparkling gourami now that he/she has some friends

OMG!!!!!!!!!!! THAT IS AN AWSOME DEAL. 6.75 for four of anything (except ghost shrimp) is an awsome deal here. What size tank do you have the 5 (right?) in? is it planted and what site did you order the sparkling gourami at? and if it is like a 55, and you bought them from liveaquaria then i would buy a couple of the licorice gouramis and make it a rare, dwarf, beautiful gourami tank. If it is heavily planted you could put 5 of each in there. and then a school of 6-8 cories. and that would be an AWSOME tank. any way good buy and good luck. Keep me posted, just pm me on any new details.
