I agree with what has already been posted, but if you do decide to get an invertibrate to keep with your betta be aware that *some* bettas will try to eat inverts and will kill them. I have one betta that likes eating snails (he pulls them right out of the shell) . If you're getting a snail or maybe a few shrimp, don't spend too much money on them or you might be feeding your betta an expensive lunch. I would probably get a few ghost srhimp because they are far less waste-producing than any snail and in small tanks that's really important. If you want more than one fish for that tank and can keep up with the maintenance of it, a trio or pair of small killifish woukd work, or maybe 2-3 male endlers or "feeder" guppies. If you go with guppies, make sure you get all males or you will be overrun with a bunch of babies very quickly. |

If you betta is the gentle type, (This is difficult to figure out, so I'd have another tank waiting, just in case) you can put it easily with ADfs(African Dwarf Frogs). I had a betta with 3 ADFs in a 2.5 gallon tank for 2 years. It would have worked out longer, but all of the animals were from not so good chain stores. The betta is still going strong, but the frogs are dead. Granted, this is a bit more cleaning than most fishtanks, but it was worth it. However, I would NOT put in inverts, like the others said. That same betta, which didn't touch the frogs, killed my fully grown apple snail. BTW: Kitten has an excellent thread on this sort of stuff which is in general freshwater. It shouldn't be too hard to find. |

However, any violence will occur over a period of time. This gives you ample time to watch for fowl play and take care of the situation. - DJ :88) |
