I'm rebuilding a 29g tank and was wondering if anybody knew of other fish that go good with a male betta?

Meh, some people have success putting bettas in a community tank, but I personally don't recommend it. Sometimes the filter can be too strong for them and those fins can be a little too tempting to the other fish. Instead I suggest that you go to Walmart and buy him a 1-5g tank, depending on what you can afford and then go crazy with your 29g. You could turn it into a community tank with a couple schools of tetras, some bottom feeders and a centerpiece fish
or
a specialty tank with, for example, all gouramis, or all rainbows
or
a chichlid tank with kribs and/or rams, or shell dwellers
or
a heavily planted tank with a school of about 10-15 tetras for flashes of color
or
a breeder tank...

As you can see there are many possibilities. I'd say take this chance use your imagination and create your dream tank (within 29 gallons of course)

Good luck

Well, while I agree in that male bettas don't appreciate strong filter currents, I know that they eventually get used to it, and/or find an area in the tank with mild current. I have a male betta in my 29 gallon, and he is pretty happy in there.

Some good tankmates for bettas include: Cories, since they don't hang out near bettas, and are peaceful; Smaller, non-aggressive tetras, as they will stay out of a betta's way; and plecos, as they won't bother a betta, either.

And when he gets to Heaven, to Saint Peter he will tell: "One more Marine reporting, Sir! I've served my time in Hell."

well i originally had a single male betta in there when i got the tank. he loved it and i had put a few large plants in front of the filter to breakup the current and again he didnt seem to have any problems with that.

but when i had put some tiger barbs in there with them (found they had ick reall bad), i ended up losing up all of them even after trying to save them. and i found out later that they are not a good choise. but i had just talked with one store near me that pictus catfish are good with them

thanks for the other ideas for tank mates.

i also have another tank, a 10g with a single male all by his self. i'm also building a custom tank that will house 6 of them with about 4g of water each. and in january i'm getting my large tank to house just community fish and no bettas.
