I have read that a paper cup is needed for the nest.

Will styrofoam do?

That's actually probably what they meant by paper cup, and what I've seen used in most photos.

When i was reading on bettatalk.com they say to use styrofoam....so i think that i would be perfectly fine.. and doesnt have the possibility of breaking down in the tank like paper could.

A lot of people use leaves instead, such as that of lettuce(which will also produce infusoria for you).

styrofoam is good for a nest holder but they wouldn't find any styrofoam in the wild so plants are really good.

Styrofoam is good to use... Betta breeders in thailand I hear use banana or indian almond leaves for spots for nesting. These leaves promote natural habitat and spawning. They die the water a brownish tea color.

Def the way to go, but the cup thing works too.

I have a few methods, all have worked. One is cutting a very well-washed instant ramen cup in half. Works great. The other is lots of floating plants-- indian almond leaves, in my water, seem to deteroriate and fall to the bottom too fast. I've also heard of using old tupperware lids, particularly yellow, because they said it's scientifically proven bettas are attracted to yellow (weird)!

When I breeded my Bettas I used wax paper, and it worked great. Good luck, and keep us posted of any new babies!
