Exactly what other fish are we talking about here? I'd recommend a blue gourami (Trichogaster trichopterus), but adding a five inch fish could overstock your tank or upset your plans for it.

So, you plan on just the mollies and the gourami for sure? A blue gourami would work just fine then, they tend to be good fry eaters. Unfortunately, they'll likely eat the ghost shrimp.

If you do want an algae eater, just remember that you should get one that won't grow past seven inches. Any algae eating fish beyond that size would be too large for a thirty gallon tank, in my opinion.

First of all, there is no species of fish that will be a janitor and clean the tank. Any fish you put in there will excrete more waste and will require more food.

Mollies don't live long in FW - they need light brackish and can even do well in high/full saltwater. No gourami/labyrinth fish does well in brackish, though.

That said, a single paradise fish would keep things in line.

Mollies do NOT need brackish water to survive Eric.
I have been keeping Sailfin Mollies and Dalmation Mollies in my freshwater tank for 3 years now with no problems.

For a 30g tank I would go for a pair of Pearl Gouramis,
or an Opaline Gourami

Is your water hard (that helps)? Three years in pure FW is really good for mollies, but I'll maintain they are native to brackish waters and thrive in Florida in near full SW. I also think they tend to be healthier, never have "shimmies", and are ich free.

Just on the Molly debate I know that my LFS uses mollies to cycle their saltwater tanks and they live in there now. But I know of people who kept them for longer than 3 years in Freshwater.

No I add about 2 lbs of Peat to my filters in the tank they are in, and the result is ph 6.6, hardness >80ppm.

They have never had "ich" or shimmies and they seem very healthy, going on 3 years now and hopefully several more!

Wow, SVS, I'm really surprised they're doing well at that pH! More power to you...and apparently mollies are more adaptable than I gave them credit for.

I have kept mollies in FW for many years as well. They breed like crazy and seem to thrive
