hello
i was wondering if anyone could tell me if a betta would be a bad idea to put in my tank. i want a fish that will kind of set off the tank. right now i only have a 10 gallon but by the end of may i hope to get a 55 gallon. right now i have two dinosaur eels, two long finned tetras, a mickey mouse platy, and a plecosomus. the dinosaur eels are only aggressive to fish that they can swallow. i dont want to get a fish now because my tank is probly alredy overstocked, so i am waiting to get anymore fish until i get my bigger tank. if not a betta what would anyone suggest?
thanks

I sure wouldn't add the betta at this point. You may want to make the 10 gallon a betta tank once you move your other fish to the 55 gallon once you get it.

I agree with old timer. I have had platties pick on betta's or vice versa. Keep the 10 then put a beta in there with some cory's.

I, too, agree with the idea of not adding any more fish to your tank. You don’t want to overstock and then have sick fish. Wait until you get your hands on a 55-gal, and then you can think of maybe adding more fish. Hmm…. Long-finned tetras and betas… I don’t know about this.. Wouldn’t the betta be tempted to attack other fish that might resemble its own kind?

"something colorful"

If you really want something colorful, try getting a Pearl Gouramie – they are rather beautiful. I don’t know whether they’ll be good companions for your fish – I only have Gouramies – but I’m definitively sure that you cannot mix Gouramies and betas, as the betas will go after anything that looks like another male Betta… although, a nice, and colorful female betta would get along nicely with Gouramies.

Bettas generally won't get along with anything that has long fins. However most species of gourami would work great. Aside from the giant gourami which wouldn't fit and the paradise fish which has an attitude more like a betta. Gouramis come in lots of colors and a few different sizes.
I would worry about the dinosaur eels eating anything in the tank when they get full size. If they are the fish usually labelled dinosaur eel they will get near 12" long. In the end the pleco may be the only safe fish in the tank.

betta fish are known to0 get agressive in a community because they are bred to fight and they dont like all the open space with other fish swimming around in there/
