jenbabe256 Big Fish Posts: 316 Kudos: 312 Votes: 10 Registered: 21-Jul-2004 | We've had our first baby!! At least the first one I've ever seen. He has survived the past few days by hiding out under the bubble bar. I was just wondering what I need to do to keep him alive. Do I need to feed him anything special? I have seen him nipping at the rocks a few times, but I don't know if this is enough. Any and all advice would be super appreciated. I would really like him to survive without being eaten or starving. TIA Jen |

jenbabe256 Big Fish Posts: 316 Kudos: 312 Votes: 10 Registered: 21-Jul-2004 | It's a 10 gallon with 3 guppies and 4 cories. There aren't very many plants in the tank at all. So far I've only seen the one baby, but they are so small that there definitely could be more than one. I'll just make sure that some of the flake food gets down to where he's at. Thanks Jen |

jenbabe256 Big Fish Posts: 316 Kudos: 312 Votes: 10 Registered: 21-Jul-2004 | The 10 gallon is only a temporary home for the cories. Also, there is a serious debate over whether cories need to be in groups of 6. I have other cories in larger groups and they act exactly the same as the group of 4. Thanks for the help on keeping the baby guppy alive. Jen |

houston Fish Guru You want what when? Posts: 2623 Kudos: 2462 Votes: 337 Registered: 29-Mar-2003 | Jen go out and get yourself a bunch (1 bunch, how it's sold) of anacharis...remove the rubberband or whatever they have holding it all together and let it float at the top of the tank...next take your regular fish flakes put some in a ziplock baggy, and crush them to dust. Viola, now you have fry food, and the fry have a place to hide other than under the airstone. My fry like to swim up there (more heat?) and I just tend to feed all of my fish the food dust at all times, as I always seem to have fry of all sizes in that tank :%). Best of luck let me know if you need some help...Heidi ps keep not of the first time you saw the fry (there are or were more), if it was tiny size of | and basically clear, not really swimming (more jerky than anything else) you can figure it was a few days old (less than a week, morel like less than 3 or 4). Now note it on a calendar the date spread...count off 28 days and start watching your tank very carefully morning, noon, and night if possible (yep get glooed to the tank ) you can expect to see new fry sometime soon (28-32 days gestation)...even without a male around :%) Again, Heidi Last edited by BBNP at 11-Jan-2005 21:53[/font] "I've got a great ambition to die of exhaustion rather than boredom." I mix up about 8 different foods, then fill a small container and super guppy fry food! Definetly add a fluffy live plant like anachris, hornwort, or asian ambulia. It will help your babies survive. As to the person's comment on corys in a 10g tank- that really depends on the type of cory. 4 aggassizi, trilineatus, panda, pygmy etc corys (smaller) would do just fine, whereas the bigger ones like bronze, albinos, me Come Play Yahtzee With Me! http://games.atari.com Http://www.myleague.com/yahtgames |

jenbabe256 Big Fish Posts: 316 Kudos: 312 Votes: 10 Registered: 21-Jul-2004 | Thanks for all your help guys. I'll run and get some kind of fluffy top plant tomorrow or the next day and crush up some flakes in the mean time. The first time we saw the baby was about five days ago and he was already freely swimming around with no problems. He has started to come to the front of the tank when he sees us peeking in but is still very very small and relatively clear. I really have no idea how to gage how long he had been in there before I saw him though. I'll try and watch my female guppies to get a better gage next time she has babies so I'll be better prepared. Thanks again for all your help! Jen PS. My cories are blackfin cories which, according to the profile here, are only supposed to get 1.7 inches. So, I guess they should be fine if I decide not to move them Last edited by jenbabe256 at 11-Jan-2005 22:11 |

guppymax Hobbyist Posts: 77 Votes: 0 Registered: 25-Dec-2004 | I would put mama in a five gallon bucket with a sponge or box filter and some plastic plants in about 26 days. The others do not need an opportunity to eat the fry. max |
