I just started my first aquarium a few weeks ago.

I currently have 8 male guppies in my 40 gallon tank with 11 Neon Tetras. People say 1:2 male to female guppy ratio is good.

I read somewhere on www.about.com and other sites it's okay to keep them all male, but they will nip at other male guppies fins since they are natural breeders.

I'm planning to add other fishes to the tank so i don't want to overcrowd it with 16 female guppies to keep the 8 males company. And I don't want my guppies breeding like crazy. So is it okay to keep them all male?

What do you guys think?

this may sound cruel, i'm so bad.

Thanks in advance.

purely my opinion, but I wouldn't have so many males in that size. They can get teratorial, but if they were all brought from the same place at the same time they'll get on better.

good luck

I've found that so long as there are no females present to fight over, groups of males can co-exist peacefully in a tank togeather. But that's just my expirience, I could have had wimpy guppies.

There's no issues I've seen with keeping all males together. When one of my guppies turned out to be male (they were supposed to be all females), I wound up with fry, of course. I keep the females and my sister gets the males. She has eight males in her 15 gallon and they're doing fine. Of course, seven of them are still juvies, but they're doing well so far!

All males works fine. I kept 5 together until the died of old age. They were a little confused though and started showing off for the mollies.

Have fun, Mike

You should be fine with just males. If there was problems with keeping just males together, fish stores wouldn't do it. There's no way a store would intentionaly risk their money makers.
