Just curious. Shipping is of course expensive, but you can find some varieties that you may not find at your lfs. I'm tempted, but does anyone have any thoughts on or experience with the matter?

They're pretty hardy fish, don't see why shipping them would be any different than shipping other hardy fish. If there's a certain variety youre looking for then it could be worth it, but geez, I'd hate to spend all that money on shipping for a platy...

I'd check LFSs far and wide before ordering platies online, but do what ya gotta do

I've had much more sensitive fish than that shipped to me. Try aquabid.com and usually you can get common livebearers for less than a dollar each. After you add in shipping it comes out about the same as the lfs except your getting a certain variety you want. That's how I got my snakeskin and lyretail guppies.

Out of curiosity, what kind of platy are you looking for?

Well, I should explain. I'm in the process of setting up a 37 g, and will transfer many of the fish in my current 20 over to the 37. So I was thinking about getting a few platies for the 20. This is all several weeks away yet. So I've been day dreaming, I suppose. But it seems like all of the LFSs around here just have reds, red wags, "mickey mouse," and sunburst. Pretty ordinary.

Some of the dealers online have types I have never seen before at any of the local LFSs: "black panther" "silver wag," and "blue," for instance. So I'm not necessarily looking for a specific type, but if I do end up going with a few platies in the 20, I'd like something a little out of the ordinary.

My father keeps some pretty ordinary platies. with the exception of a single "candy wag." If I decide to order online some day, perhaps I'll go in on it with him.

Try to find some local breeders in your area, that may have a variaty of Platies. You can pay a bit more, but you save on the postage.

Why don't you try some small Cichlids in your 20 gal.?.

Actually I am also considering apistos. They're kind of hard to find in my area, though.

My Bolivian Ram will be transferred over to the 37, along with my angel. I will then add one or two more angels. The ram and the angel seem to be companions, having been in the same tank most of their lives (even at the lfs).

Platies are appealing to me because they're so easy to breed. But the 37 is a work in progress, so perhaps I will try to pair up some angels in it. I've never given serious effort to breeding egg layers, though.

Maybe I could keep a couple male platies in the 37 and a few females in the 20.
