Hello, I am new to the forum. I just noticed this morning that my metallic blue guppy's tail is torn/split. There is only one other male guppy in the 2.5 gallon tank. Does anyone know if this is harmful? Will it grow back together? Will this hurt him? Is there anything that I should do? Both fish are healthy and are swimming around like nothing is wrong. Thanks

Put a little salt (non-iodized, they make aquarium salt) in the tank, a teaspoon or so in a 2.5gal. Maybe a little Melafix if you have it and hope. Tails and fins will heal and grow if they aren't too bad. Sometimes splits, if they go too far stay around a very long time.

Good luck, Mike

If nothing else attacks the tail, it should be able to heal. They will heal faster if you add the suggested items to the tank.

I bought some melafix. Now, will this med hurt the other guppy that is in the tank. I have a 5g but it is only a day old and hate to move him to it. I also understand that I need to remove the filter since it has carbon in it. Should I replace the filter without carbon since the med instructions say to use for 7 days?

Melafix and salt won't hurt the other one, guppies like a lttle salt anyway. Just add it when you do a water change from now on though or you can get too much, salt does not evaporate.

Putting the other on in a new tank would start the cycle. If you do that keep an eye on the ammonia.

Good luck, Mike
