So I have 3 females and 1 male, and so far 6 babies have survived. My question's are what are the odds that all the babies are female? Because they are. Also I am considering taking the male back to the fish store because he won't leave the females alone, specifically 1 of them. He is attached to her 23/7. What should I do?

well, are u trying to breed them or not. if u return the male, the females can store sperm for up to maybe 5 spawns, so u will still get some babies. they male should be fine with the babies, and the females.

Mia,

My question's are what are the odds that all the babies are female? Because they are

How do you know they are all female? I could not identify the gender of my baby platies until they were about 3 months old. Only then did the males develop their gonopodium. If you have really young fry then they all look like they would be females.

The chances that all of your fry are female are rather slim (too lazy right now to do a statistical equation), but certainly better than winning the lottery.

Also I am considering taking the male back to the fish store because he won't leave the females alone, specifically 1 of them. He is attached to her 23/7.

What is he doing in the extra hour every day

Seriously, I had the same thing happening and I was informed that the male platies tend to pick a favorite female that they attend to all the time. I think one way around this is to increase the group of similar marked females as mine now tends to get confused of whom we was after. But that also means that you will have to expect more fry.

Hope this helps,

Ingo

well 5 of the 7 babies (I found a little tiny new baby hiding in a java fern during feeding time) I have are over 4 months old and they are all females, the other 2 babies are about 0-2 months. I didn't know that the males picked a favorite I think that's cute And by the way the other hour he spends away from her he's checking in on the other 2 females I also didn't realize that the babies had to be a certain age before you could sex them but it makes sense. Thanks for the advise

Yes, sometimes males pick a favorite, and sometimes some of the other females get chased away by the male. Just an advice separate the male for 2-3 days right after the female whom he picked gave birth, that can cause so much stress for her.

I would remove the male from time to time & add him when you want to breed only. This way, the females don't get stressed too much.
