Baby platys and their parents? | |
Mia Hobbyist Posts: 86 Kudos: 79 Votes: 2 Registered: 20-Mar-2005 | I was just wondering a few things.....first is that I looked in my tank a week ago and noticed some babies, I counted maybe 6, (I'm not too sure which one had the babies cause all 3 of them look the same as they did before) I still seem to have all of them and was wondering when I can relax about them being eaten by their parents?? Also is it ok for the mommies to continue their life having pregnancy after pregnancy? Thanks |

Yes, they do eat their fry, but just provide your tank a heavy plant for the fry to hide in; floating plants will be very good. It is okay because they are prolific breeder, mother platies are almost always pregnant; they will drop a bunch of fry every month. good luck for the fry! |

Plenty of people, though, have raised fry with their parents, before, thoughm with the aforementioned planting. |

If you platties are relatively young they number of fry in a batch will be small...with each batch the female will increase in the number of fry, so be warned 2. You can feel free to leave the fry in the tank with the parents...make sure that it is well planted, this will ensure that the fry have a good place to hide and swim without the risk (or as much risk) of being eaten. I really have a fondness of anarcharis, it is really easy to grow, and rather hard to kill Plant some in a corner, and let some float above it then the fry will have the freedom to swim free 3. It is fairly safe for females to have one pregnancy after the other, just be sure that if they males are harrassing her too much after a fry drop to give her a place to hide, or even a breeding net to get her away from the pests, for a day or so 4. Keep in mind though that even if you were to remove the males from the tank, she will still remain pregnant and able to have 6-9 more batches of fry with no need of a male being present 5. Also a cheap and easy way to feed everyone at once, just take your basic fishie food, and put some of whatever in a ziplock bag, and rub it between your hands grinding it to dust...then presto you have instant fry food... Best of luck, and enjoy the fry, there will be many many many more to come I assure you heidi "I've got a great ambition to die of exhaustion rather than boredom." Thomas Carlyle |
