TigerAngel Fish Addict Posts: 522 Registered: 22-Feb-2004 | I've had Balloon Mollys for a over a year now. True - they don't live long. But most Mollys don't live for over 2-3 years away. They are more delicate than normal Mollys. They can died with no warning signs. My two females gave birth. Some fry are normal mollys and some are Balloons. The babys of my two girls didn't grow very big. Exspecially the males. This is Dumpy (as in Humpy Dumpy) TigerAngel attached this image: |

It's like purposefully breeding deformed kittens or something. It just doesn't seem ethical, even if they *can* live okay. |

At first I use to pass these guys by because of the lack of color in them. But then my lfs started getting lots of color variations in and I found 3 that I just had to have. They now have Calico Balloons up there but they want $8 a piece for them... they are great looking though, I may have to add another to my tank... The 3 I have are 1 Green and Oranged Striped. 1 that is kinda Black Marble looking and 1 that is just a really nice shade of orangish/red. They always stick together in their little group. I might set up my extra 29 gallon just for balloon mollies. Don |

cichlidiot Hobbyist Posts: 142 Registered: 14-Apr-2004 | I had a trio in a 10 gallon with a pair of ottos for about 2 years. They seemed very happy. While I had them they reproduced several times as livebearers do. But unlike other mollies brood size tends to be small, rarely numbering over 10. When I moved I gave aquarium and all to my cousin and they died shortly thereafter due to heater malfunction. |

I once had one when I was a newbie and it died suddenly.(Not of any newbie mistakes the tank was cycled.)I think they are sentenced to a very short life since they are so inbred. There is also sailfin balloon mollies which are balloon mollies crossed with sailfin mollies. I would not buy these as they are even worse.:%):%):%):%):%)]:|]:|]:|]:| |

niggit Fish Addict Posts: 631 Kudos: 282 Votes: 0 Registered: 29-Jan-2003 | as far as i know, it was a naturally occuring mutation that has been perpetuated by selective breeding... like some of the freakish goldfish. i'm not sure if the fish mind or not... i would just advise not to keep them with anything too rambunctious, as they seem to be a little disadvantaged when it comes to swimming capabilities. cheers! |
