My non-scientific reason is the blue platies I've had just don't have the fake-looking coloring that dyed fish seem to have. I had a blue dawn female, mostly blue with a small bit of orange, and I saved one of her fry. It ended up being a beautiful but very natural blue. The mom has since died so I'm glad I have her fry. The rest of my platies are various reds, oranges, yellows, and one calico. I wanted to get more blue in the tank so I recently ordered a blue spotted male platy online. I did ask if their platies were dyed...because I've seen similar fish in other lfs I don't believe this one is either. He's a very nice looking light blue with darker blue spots and a dark blue Mickey Mouse pattern. ~~~~~~~~~~~~ There is water at the bottom of the ocean |

Among the colorization of their "Daddy" (orange, black spots, black fins and tail --- in several combination patterns!) you see the wonderful sheen of "Mommy's" blue and white! In our little rural area, I will have to confess that finding the blue platys is VERY difficult - but that's to be expected since the only live fish in town for purchase are related to one actual lfs and one Wal Mart! But we were lucky enough to find 2 females!!!!! And they definitely give my tank some personality! (One of my favorite fry - which I now refer to as "Rainbow" - even though, in general I don't name my fish - has all the colors of both parents! Though I know due to the quantity of fry most will end up being given to our lfs - Rainbow will be mine FOREVER!) To thine own self be true... |

I would expect that the blue platties are simply bred specifically to be rather blueish - just like the various strains of Yellow/Orange/Black plattys. correct me if i'm wrong |
